The number three has always held symbolism. It is the number of time – past, present, future; birth, life, death, beginning, middle, end.

It’s a number I like to work with in my day job. It can represent good things coming, such as the mind-body-soul connection, or define sections of a paper ( methodology, concepts, and then conclusion ), or present as our wisdom, knowledge, and understanding.

From ‘This Pathological Life” podcast being structured with 3 main chapters, to the third word in a headline being the most important element for me, to my sentences containing three key ideas, my natural working routine flows best with this number.

As Chris Heckmann points out in his article, the rule of three is a storytelling principle that suggests people better understand concepts, situations, and ideas in groups of three. He says, “over time, the rule has been confirmed by anthropological experts as an archetypal principle that works on three levels: sentences, situations, and stories.”

He presents subtypes of the rule of three as being;

• Hendiatris: When three words express the same idea (life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness)

• Tricolon: When three parallel elements have a similar number of words or syllables (veni, vedi, vici); (I came, I saw, I conquered)

However, I put it back to you. What is a number which flows best for you? One which you are commonly drawn to? Could it be the number 5, or perhaps 8, or even the lucky number 7?

For me, it’s three. Oh hang on, that’s four. But you get it… (dot dot dot).
