Facebook Legacy

What happens to your Facebook profile when you die has long been an important, if not controversial, issue. We’ve previously discussed life after death on Facebook, here. Now, Facebook is moving to help you manage themselves. A legacy contact is someone you choose to look after your account if it’s memorialised. You previously would have assigned your “Trusted Accounts“, who are really just people you can reach out to, to help you reset your password etc. Legacy Accounts are the next level of responsibility.

Note: This feature isn’t available in Australia as yet but it seems it may be coming.


“Your Facebook legacy contact will be able to set up your profile page to remember you. Your legacy contact could, for instance, write a post announcing details of a memorial service, update your profile picture and cover photo, respond to new friend requests, or download an archive of your profile posts and photos, Facebook said Thursday in an emailed statement. Your profile page could also be retitled with the word “Remembering” above your name.

Your Facebook executor isn’t all powerful, though, and will not be able to actually log in as you, change your account settings or see your private messages.

You can also let Facebook know if you’d prefer to have your account deleted upon your death.”


Tugg is a web-platform that lets you bring the movies you want to your local theatre. Films are selected by the viewing audience for their local theatre. Tugg is currently available only in the United States and in Australia for select titles. But that won’t be the case forever. This story is about one film maker’s push via social media to have his movie watched.

Big shout out to those people creating roof top theatres here in Adelaide (as suggested by the new Lord Mayor) would be to consider having the audiences select the evenings movie using Tugg perhaps?

#AskHerMore hashtag had good and bad consequences in the social medias with some seeing this stance as ungrateful that the “super stars” should backlash free designer dresses and not promote them. But yes, we do want to inspire journalists to ask more creative questions and not just what they are wearing.

Oscar Stats

Of course the statistics keep getting higher – or do they? Yes for Facebook. No for Twitter.

21 million people engaged on Facebook during the Oscars performance with 58 million posts shared – and the most popular being Lady Gaga’s sounds of music.

However, this popularity was not repeated on Twitter. To quote Mashable’s article:

Twitter’s Oscar night stats won’t win any awards. Fewer people tweeted about the Oscars telecast this year than in 2014 or even in 2013, according to Nielsen.

Nielsen figures showed there were a total of 5.9 million Oscar-related tweets. That’s down about 65% from last year’s 17.1 million, though the latter figure was global while the 5.9 million referred to the U.S. In 2013, there were 8.9 million tweets about the show. That figure is also global.

TIP for correcting suggested friends on Facebook

People are getting concerned that those blonde, scantly clad ladies might be friends of friends. In fact, these girls and this function from Facebook ie to suggest friends that you might like to connect with, is generated by friends of friends, pages you have liked and interests you have listed. Therefore, to change the type of people you see suggested, unlike or change the pages you follow.

I’ve previously mentioned my microvolunteering project, which looks at using “virtual volunteering” to help with dementia patients, isolation in the community etc. Well, I have been asked to host #microday on behalf of the English organisation “HelpFromHome” here in Adelaide.
