The Australian Government has announced the finalisation of legislation for the News Bargaining Incentive (NBI), a new measure designed to support the long-term sustainability of Australian journalism.

The NBI encourages large digital platforms to enter commercial agreements with media organisations for news content. Platforms that do not participate may be required to pay a charge, with funds directed back into Australia’s news sector.

Following consultation, the Government has enhanced support for regional publishers, small and medium-sized outlets, media serving underrepresented communities, and freelance journalists.

A new grants program will be established to support smaller publishers and start-ups.

The initiative builds on the News Media Bargaining Code introduced in 2021 and aims to strengthen Australia’s public-interest journalism sector while encouraging ongoing partnerships between digital platforms and news organisations.

The legislation is expected to be introduced to Parliament later this year.
